On March 23rd, a maintenance convoy from the Third U.S. Infantry Division mistakenly veered into Nasseria, unknowingly heading straight into the headquarters of the Iraqi Third Corps. The results were devastating as 15 out of their 18 vehicles were obliterated by heavy weapons fire, leading to the capture or death of 18 U.S. soldiers. Despite this horrific ambush, there were crucial strategic gains that day.
By the evening of March 24th, Marines managed to break through the defenses and establish a perimeter north of Nasseria. This perimeter held firm despite multiple counter-attacks by Iraqi forces and the Fedayeen Saddam militia, who showed unyielding fanaticism.
Further north, the town of Najaf sat at a critical junction close to key highways leading to Karbala and Baghdad. Its strategic location made it impossible for coalition forces to bypass.
On March 25th, elements of the First Brigade Combat Team targeted the northern bridge, coded Jenkins. Progress was sluggish until dawn when reinforcements allowed American forces to secure the bridge. In synchronous action, U.S. troops advanced on the southern bridge named Objective Floyd, facing intense resistance from Iraqi military and militia forces alike.
By March 26th, coalition forces successfully encircled Najaf, allowing the 101st Airborne Division to relieve the attackers. Over subsequent days, U.S. tanks and infantry swept through the town, leveraging a single open road as a kill zone for escaping Iraqi troops.
To the south, British forces faced unforeseen difficulties in capturing Basra and its neighboring port, beginning their attack on March 27th. Over two weeks, they methodically diminished the Iraqi garrison defending this pivotal location.
When the British finally secured Basra, minimal British casualties were noted compared to the severe losses suffered by Iraqi forces.
Despite being celebrated by local populations, this joy quickly turned into chaos with rampant looting, much like the situation in Nasseria.
The critical Karbala Gap, a roughly 40-kilometer long terrain flanked by the Euphrates and Rizaza Rivers, was effectively defended by two divisions of the elite Republican Guard. However, a strategic blunder by Saddam Hussein’s son altered the defenses, redirecting forces and weakening their position.
On April 1st, American troops broke through the Karbala Gap, reaching the Euphrates at Museeb.
With the path to Baghdad open, the final push for the capital commenced.
Approaching Baghdad meant facing a dissolved regular army but determined Ba’athist Party militias adept at guerrilla tactics.
Colonel David Perkins orchestrated several “thunder runs” into Baghdad, using nearly 30 tanks to zip past enemy lines and gather critical intel.
Following these breakthroughs, U.S. Marines captured the Diyala Bridge and utilized their northern approach to advance further.
After further intense skirmishes and urban combat, Baghdad was ultimately captured on April 9th. Like in Basra, initial celebrations quickly gave way to widespread looting and vandalism. Despite these challenges, coalition forces established control over the capital.
Despite initial control, capturing Baghdad marked the beginning of a long, complex occupation.
On May 1, 2003, President Bush declared the end of major combat operations aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, stating the “mission accomplished.” However, the conflict was far from over, transitioning into a protracted counter-insurgency campaign that stretched out for another eight years.
Though the brief conventional phase was declared over, the Iraq War had only just begun, echoing the prolonged conflict seen in Afghanistan.
The story of the Iraq War underscores not just the complexities of modern warfare but also the significant role that logistical, strategic, and technological factors play. As we decode these elements, we remember how crucial it is to make informed choicesโwhether on the battlefield or in everyday life decisions.
